Conflict Resolution Team - Peer Conflict Mediation Services

The premeire prgram of Peer Resources  is Peer Conflcit Mediation. This is a process where stdents are trained to be conflict mediators for fellow students.  The mediators are trained in a three step conciliation process which was developed by Community Boards of San Francisco, and was introduced  into the Public Schools in the early days of the Peer Resource Program.  Conflict Mediation has proven to be one the most effective and succesful Peer Resource programs. At MLK we currenlty have fifteen trained mediators who are active members of the CONFLCIT RESOLUTION TEAM.

THE CONFLCIT MEDIATION PROCESS:
1)Introduction:
In The Process of the Conflict Mediation, our Team will explain the rules to the disputants.

2)Define the Problem:
The Conflict Mediation Team figures out what is going on that makes the conflict happen.
They have each disputant take turns telling what happened.
They use active listening skills so the disputants know they are  being heard.

3)Resolution:
The C.R.T. helps the disputants make a peace agreement
They summarize the disputant's concerns you have heard from both sides
The C.R.T asks each disputant what they want from the other.
The C.R.T find out and tell the disputant what they have in common.
They then develope a formal agreement

20 Angry Outburst Alternatives

The following ideas were created to provide you with ways to express anger and cooldown that are not directed toward people or harmful to yourself of other.

1. Do jumping Jacks

2. Give yourself a hug

3. Take a Brisk walk outside

4. Count to 10 in a loud voice

5. Shake your whole body, start with your feet and work up to your head

6. Turn on music and dance. In other words GET FUNKY

7. Wash a sinkful of dishes with lots of bubbles
8. rip up old newspapers, Magazines, Phonebooks, rags or sheets and go on a cleaning spree and throw them out

The Conflict Resolution Team has completed basic training in the Peer Resources Class (PRC), and is NOW AVAILABLE to manage disputes between students.

THREE PEER LED conflict mediations occured in the week of March 2 - 6.

Andre Hilton, and Dajania Tillery both participated in their FIRST peer mediated conflict resoution intervention last week. They were GREAT - and were actually complimented by the student disputants who they helped!!!!!!!!!!

Karche Lindsey, who is a previously trained peer mediator from Everet MS and is our most expereicned and seasoned Peer Mediator also particpated in resolving student conflicts last week. I appreciate her experience and what she offers as a leader for other new peer conflict managers.

If you are aware of a conflcit between students that you wish to refer for PEER CONFLICT RESOLUTION  help - please notify Greg Brown, at
gregorypaul33@hotmail.com - his mail box in the main office - or come by ROOM 101.

We now have ON CALL peer conflict mangers standing by at lunch to mediate yard conflicts. Lunchtime yard supervisors can bring conflicted students right in to room 101.

PEER EDUCATORS - students helping students learn;

"lol-101; lOTS OF LEARNING IN ROOM 101"

1) Our Peer Educators have developed a presentation on personal and emotional safety, and setting personal boundries. We are hoping to present this presentation to at least TEN  third period classrooms in the month of March.

This presentation on maintaining personal safety and boundries was developed by the PRC - Peer Educators and Conflcit Mediators in response to some of the bullying interactions and incidents that have occured at school between students at MLK recently. It was presented by MLK PRC students as a wrokshop at the YOUTH ARE RESOURCES conference on Feb. 20, and was well recieved by an audience of middle school students and Peer Resource Teachers.

Please consider allowing our Peer Educators to come into your third period class for one period to present to your students. Reserve your time with Greg Brown.

The presentation will be presented to Student Council on Wed. March 11.

2) HOMEWORK HELP - PEER EDUCATORS ARE STILL AVAILABLE IN room 101 AFTER SCHOOL UNTIL 4:30 - daily - REPORTS CARDS ARE ARRIVING HOME - please refer your students whom you beleive will bennefit from individual homework help from a capable peer role model.
